Reading Research Vial Labels: Identity, Strength, and Units
A container label states certain facts and leaves others unknown. Read what is actually printed without inferring quality, suitability, identity, or use that the label does not establish.

Start with identity and status, not the largest number
A disciplined label review begins with the stated product or material name, molecular or catalog identifier when present, formulation status, and any research-use restriction. Similar names can refer to different sequences, salts, modifications, or mixtures. The most visually prominent number may be package quantity rather than concentration. Copy the complete identity and qualifier before interpreting any numerical field.
Separate total amount from per-volume strength
An amount followed by 'per vial' describes a container total. A value such as mg/mL describes concentration. A liquid label may also present both total amount and total volume, and those should reconcile arithmetically if they refer to the same contents. A dry material label cannot yield a mass-per-volume concentration without a separately defined final volume. Readers should not invent a missing denominator.
Traceability fields support investigation, not quality proof
Lot or batch number, manufacturer or supplier, manufacture date, expiration or retest date, storage statement, and a reference to a certificate of analysis help connect the container with records. Their presence does not independently prove identity, purity, sterility, or regulatory compliance. Claims should be checked against the underlying documentation, analytical methods, issuer, and chain of custody rather than inferred from professional-looking design.
Use a transcription checklist and stop at ambiguity
Record the label exactly, including capitalization, unit symbols, numerator and denominator, total volume, and qualifiers. Photograph or preserve the source record where permitted, then compare it with official or supplier documentation. If identity, unit basis, or concentration is ambiguous, the safe analytical conclusion is 'unknown,' not a guessed conversion. A second-person verification step can reduce transcription error when a label will support a research record. The reviewer should compare the copied identity, lot, numerical value, prefix, and denominator character by character against the source. Agreement between two readers improves the record but still does not validate the underlying material or its claims.
