Concentration, Dose, Amount, and Volume: A Research Glossary

Concentration, mass, volume, and dose are often used as though they mean the same thing. This glossary keeps the quantities distinct when reading studies, labels, and experimental records.

Amount, mass, and volume name different properties

In everyday writing, 'amount' may be vague. In SI terminology, amount of substance has the mole as its unit, while mass uses grams and volume uses liters or cubic units. Research papers may also use total amount informally to mean total mass in a container. Readers should identify the unit to resolve the intended quantity and avoid assuming that two uses of the same word are mathematically equivalent.

Concentration describes composition, not a chosen dose

Concentration is a ratio between a component quantity and mixture or solution quantity, such as mass per volume or moles per volume. It describes the preparation or sample. Dose, in experimental and clinical literature, describes an administered quantity according to the study protocol and may be normalized by body mass, surface area, time, or another basis. Knowing concentration alone does not determine a dose, and this glossary does not supply a selection rule.

Rate adds a time denominator; exposure summarizes what occurred

A rate expresses change or delivery per unit time, so time must remain in the denominator. Exposure is broader and can refer to contact with an intervention or to pharmacokinetic summaries such as area under a concentration-time curve. A single concentration measurement, administered amount, and exposure metric answer different questions. They should not be substituted merely because they appear in the same study.

Normalize only after identifying the denominator

Values may be normalized per kilogram, per subject, per sample, per milliliter, or per unit time. Normalization can support comparisons, but it also changes the unit and interpretation. Always record the numerator, denominator, time frame, population, and whether the value was planned, measured, or derived. This terminology framework supports critical reading; individualized dose interpretation belongs with qualified professionals, not a public educational glossary.
