How to read ClinicalTrials.gov without overclaiming
A trial registry describes a study record, not necessarily a completed study or a positive result. The fields below can answer development questions, but they cannot establish effectiveness on their own.

Start with the record, sponsor, and dates
The NCT number is the record's stable identifier. Confirm the official title, brief title, sponsor, collaborators, first-posted date, last-update date, and responsible party. A recent update can materially change recruitment status, enrollment, locations, or outcomes, so screenshots and secondary databases should be checked against the live record.
Registration means information about a study was submitted to the registry. It does not mean the study is complete, peer reviewed, approved by a regulator, or proven effective. Keep those concepts separate in every summary.
Interpret status and study design together
Recruiting, active-not-recruiting, completed, terminated, withdrawn, and unknown status describe different operational states. A completed study may have no posted results, while a terminated study may still provide useful safety or feasibility information. Read the status verification date and any reason given for stopping early.
Next inspect study type, allocation, intervention model, masking, phase, enrollment, and eligibility. These fields show whether the record is observational or interventional and whether its design can answer a causal question. Phase labels describe development purpose; they are not a score for success.
Separate outcomes from results
Outcome measures state what investigators planned to assess and at what time point. Posted results report what was observed in analyzed participants. Do not turn an outcome name into a finding. Check whether the page includes participant flow, baseline characteristics, outcome data, adverse events, and analysis details.
Compare primary and secondary outcomes with any journal paper. Differences can reflect amendments, analysis choices, or reporting timelines. A registry-to-publication comparison cannot resolve every issue, but it helps identify outcome switching, missing results, and claims that rely on a secondary endpoint without saying so.
Use the registry as one layer of evidence
A registry is especially valuable for finding study identifiers, planned endpoints, sponsor information, eligibility, locations, and development status. Pair it with the peer-reviewed report for detailed methods and interpretation, and with official regulator records for authorization or labeling questions.
When no results are posted, report that absence directly. 'A study is registered' is accurate; 'research shows' is not. Preserve the date you reviewed the record because recruitment and results status can change after publication of an educational page.

Does 'completed' mean the trial was successful?
No. It generally means the study ended according to its process. The results, analysis, and limitations determine what was observed.
Is an NCT record the same as a peer-reviewed paper?
No. The registry holds structured study information and sometimes results; a journal article usually provides fuller methods and interpretation. Both can be useful for different checks.
