The core relationship

A calculator connects mass, volume, and concentration.

At its most general, concentration describes how much material is present in a defined amount of liquid. If a label expresses mass in milligrams and liquid volume in milliliters, dividing the mass by the volume produces a concentration in milligrams per milliliter. Keeping that complete unit beside the number is the first error check.

A later step can ask how much liquid contains a stated amount of material. That is a rearrangement of the same relationship: amount divided by concentration gives volume. This page explains the arithmetic; it does not choose an amount for a person, verify a product, or turn a research example into a treatment recommendation.

Mass

The amount stated on a label, with its unit attached.

Volume

The amount of liquid, usually expressed in mL for this kind of example.

Concentration

Mass divided by volume, written as a complete ratio such as mg/mL.

A safer calculation habit

Treat the units as part of the equation, not decoration.

Transcribe the label exactly before converting anything. A copied number without its unit is incomplete information.

Convert mass units once, in a separate line. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms; that exact factor should cancel the old unit and leave the intended one.

Write concentration as a ratio. A result that says only ‘2.5’ is not checkable until it says what 2.5 means.

Estimate the order of magnitude before accepting the result. A factor-of-10 or factor-of-1,000 mistake often becomes obvious when compared with the original quantities.

Keep label verification, arithmetic, and any real-world decision as separate gates. Correct arithmetic cannot validate the product or supply missing context.
