Reconstitution Math: Concentration, Mass, and Volume

Begin with three different quantities

Mass, volume, and concentration describe different things. Mass is the amount of material stated in a record. Volume is the amount of solution. Concentration expresses one quantity per unit of another, such as mass per volume. A mathematically valid calculation begins by naming each quantity and writing its unit.

The basic relationship is concentration equals mass divided by final volume. It can also be rearranged to solve for mass or volume when the other two quantities are known. This is dimensional analysis, not a clinical recommendation.

Units are part of the calculation

Metric prefixes change scale. Milligrams, micrograms, milliliters, and liters cannot be exchanged by moving a decimal point from memory. Write the conversion factor, cancel matching units, and keep enough working digits until the final result. A unit that does not cancel is often the first sign that the equation answers a different question.

Final volume also means the full volume after all components are combined. It is not always identical to the volume of one component added. The distinction matters whenever a source record uses final concentration.

Correct arithmetic does not establish a safe procedure

The equation cannot determine identity, purity, sterility, solvent compatibility, stability, adsorption, container accuracy, storage, or suitability. It also does not select an amount, route, frequency, or personal target. Those questions require authoritative product information and qualified oversight.
